BOM
Preparing a BOM for upload: common mistakes in Excel
Placeholder text for the article layout. The final blog materials will be provided by the customer.
A clean bill of materials uploads in seconds. A messy one turns into a row-by-row clean-up. Most issues come from a handful of recurring formatting habits.
Keep the columns predictable
A part-number column and a quantity column are the minimum. Keep headers in the first row, one part per row, and avoid merged cells — they break the import.
- One part per row. Do not pack several MPNs into a single cell.
- No merged cells. They shift the grid and rows stop aligning to columns.
- Plain quantities. Numbers only — drop units, notes and ranges from the qty column.
If a row is not recognised, it is almost always the part-number column — check for stray spaces, line breaks and trailing notes.
